Turchini (1979), p.273, indicates that this was an academy of physicians who met to discuss only scientific topics in debates of a speculative nature, as the motto per coniecturas chosen for their coat of arms hints at. As early as 1761, the Accademia became the object of ill-will from the local college of physicians, who wanted to bring the Accademia under control (Turchini (1979), p.280). Although by 1764 the Duke agreed to allow the Accademia to elect whomever they pleased as leader, the controversy had already had a serious negative influence on the scientific and cultural activity of the young academicians (Turchini (1979), p.281-282). According to Turchini (1979), p.282, footnote 43, the last recorded meeting of the Accademia occurred in 1766. It is further noted that the Accademia survived some time after that, at least to 1788, since Bedinelli in his work Epicrisi sopra alcuni errori e vani giudizi del volgo (Pesaro 1788) adorns himself with the title socio nell'accademia de' congetturanti de Modena. |

Turchini, p.279 refers to this as a second volume of essays by the society, indicating that it was printed as a block within another publication, with a preamble and its own separate pagination (in Latin numbers). He identifies the publication in which this appeared as t.5 (1759) of Nuova Raccolta d'Opuscoli Scientifici e Filologici, edited by Angelo Calogerà; a copy of this is located in the GBV German Union cat., the Univ Calif. cat., and the Harvard Univ. cat.. [Note: Turchini erroneously gives the final word in the title as filosofici.] |
