Union der Deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften (UDAW)
(Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities)
[The Union was founded in 1893 with the simple name of Kartell
(evidently), and in 1940, under the National Socialists, it became the
Reichsverband der Deutschen Akademien.
In 1949, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Westdeutschen Akademien was
founded as a successor to the Kartell, and in 1967 it became the
Konferenz der Deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften in der
Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Two East-German academies later joined, the
Sächsischen Akademie (in 1991) and the
Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie (in 1993).
In 1998 the word Konferenz was replaced by Union;
evidently, at some point, the phrase
"in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland" was also removed to reflect
the fact that it contained more than West German academies.]
