On 2004, July 16, a project was begun to provide information connecting
a representative sample of journal title abbreviations used in
Poggendorff's Biographisch-Literarisches Handwörterbuch
with the full names of the journals, along with publication information
drawn from library catalogues.
As of 2006, February 15, col.1 - col.200
(i.e. the first 100 pages) of v.1 of
Poggendorff's Biographisch-Literarisches Handwörterbuch had been
processed.
At this point work was suspended; it was later begun again on 2008, April
12.
As of 2008, June 24, col.1 - col.484
(i.e. the first 242 pages) of v.1 of
Poggendorff's Biographisch-Literarisches Handwörterbuch had been
processed.
The results may be located using the links below.
It is instructive to compare the journal title abbreviation situation in
Poggendorff's Biographisch-Literarisches Handwörterbuch with that
in the
Reuss Repertorium and the
Royal Society of London Catalogue of Scientific
Papers (RSLC).
- Both Reuss and Poggendorff show variation
in the abbreviations used for particular journals.
RSLC, however, used a standard form for any given time
period.
- Both Poggendorff and RSLC indexed both
independent and society journals.
Reuss, however, was confined to
society journals (which at the time were still by far the most important
form of scholarly journals).
- Both Poggendorff and RSLC were restricted
to "scientific" journals; Poggendorff was more
restrictive, being confined to the exact sciences.
Reuss, however, covered all academic subjects.
