This date is supported by its website. Angela Broome, Librarian Archivist of the Royal Institution of Cornwall, kindly supplied (via an email message of 2005, August 10) the following information on the very early history of the Royal Institution of Cornwall. On 5th February 1818 a meeting was held in Truro when a philosophical Institution was proposed `to be formed' i.e. the Cornwall Philosophical Institution [ref: West Briton newspaper: 6/2/1818 page 2 col.3 and page 3 col.1]. A follow-up meeting was held just four weeks later on 2nd March 1818 when the officers were elected and the outline and purpose of this new institution were set down under the name the Cornwall Literary and Philosophical Institution [ref: West Briton 6th March 1818 page 4 col.1-3]. Some months later on 13th October 1818 the Opening Lecture of the Cornwall Literary and Philosophical Institution was delivered at The Town Hall, Truro [ref: West Briton: 16 October 1818 page 2 col.4]. Its website indicates that it took its current name (Royal Institution of Cornwall) in 1821 after receiving Royal patronage. |
