According to a
history page,
this Academy was founded in 1804 in the Valdarno (Val d'Arno) area of
Tuscany by Giacomo Sacchetti,
as a revival of an academy founded by Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459)
in 1434, which became inactive on the latter's death in 1459.
The same history page indicates that the Academy was adorned in 1848 with
the title Imperiale e Regia Accademia by the wish of
Leopoldo II.
For more information, see Maylender (1926-1930), v.5, pp.417-420. Determining the name of the Academy at various times is a bit difficult. Below we bring forward certain pieces of information that give us some idea of what the various names were. According to the entry on RSLC, v.1, p.li (published 1867 - 1872) the title of the Academy's first journal is Memorie Valdarnesi : Memorie dell' Accademia Valdarnese del Poggio and covers the first four volumes (1835 - 1855). According to a record in the SBN Italian Union Catalogue, the Academy published the following in 1841: Memorie scientifiche della Accademia valdarnese del Poggio. According to a record in the SBN Italian Union Catalogue, the Academy published the following in 1846: Statuti dell'imperiale e reale Accademia Valdarnese del Poggio. According to a record in the SBN Italian Union Catalogue, the Academy published the following in 1861: Statuto dell'Accademia Valdarnese del Poggio. According to a record in the GBV German Union cat. the title for the main journal of the Academy is Memorie Valdarnesi / Reale Accademia Valdarnese del Poggio. Because this is a serial entry covering a very long period of time, it is reasonable to assume that the author attribution, Reale Accademia Valdarnese del Poggio applies to the journal only part of the time. Indeed the history of Italy requires that. It seems likely that the Reale designation was applied for some period during the institution of a monarchy for Italy, namely from about 1860/1866 - 1946. |
