Bolton (1897), where Bolton also states that
this
society was
"undoubtedly the earliest organized body of chemists in either
hemisphere..."
Bogert (1908) (p.166) believes that the society ceased to exist around 1803. Edgar Smith (1914), however, believes (p.12) that the society existed for about 17 years, which would put its date of termination at around 1808. Both Bogert (1908) and Bolton (1897) make it clear that this society was different from the Columbian Chemical Society of Philadelphia, which was founded in 1811 and survived only a few years, but at least to 1813. |
