1778 According to Eriksson, [v.1, 1978], p.368, the Society traces its origins to a literary club founded by Johan Rosén in 1759, which existed for a few years, but then seems to have become defunct. In 1773, Rosén founded a new private society, Nil Nisi Suecanum, but it accomplished little since Rosén died in August of the same year (Eriksson, [v.1, 1978], p.14).
Eriksson, [v.1, 1978], p.370 indicates that on 1773, August 19 it changed from a private to an official society. The main architect for this transformation was Martin Georg Wallenstråle (1733-1807). Eriksson, [v.1, 1978], p.14 quotes from a letter of 1774, April 1 from Wallenstråle to Samuel Älf, a clergyman and Latin poet in Linköping. In that letter, just eight months after the beginning of the transformation, Wallenstråle makes it clear that he is now serving as the head of the Society in Rosén's place. He also adds that the Society is now called Götheborgska Witterhets och Wetenskaps Sälskapet. [In spite of the fact that this name is very similar to the name of the Society when it was formally instituted on 1778, August 19 by the King, the Society generally refers to 1778 as its founding date.]
On 1778, August 19 King Gustav III signed the royal declaration of patronage (Eriksson, [v.1, 1978], p.371). According to the Society Statutes of 1778 (Eriksson, [v.1, 1978], p.388), the name of the Society was in 1778 Götheborgska Wetenskaps och Witterhets Samhället.
