1772 This Society was founded in The Hague in 1772, according to the title of the following publication: Höweler, H.A.. Uit de geschiedenis van het Haagsche dichtgenootschap Kunstliefde spaart geen vlijt, 1772-1818. Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsche Taal- en Letterkunde (1937) 56: 97-184. [In Dutch.]
According to Jacob & Mijnhardt (1992), pp.260 - 267, this society was one of four major literary societies, of which the others were based in Leiden (Kunst Wordt door Arbeid Verkreegen = Art is Won by Labour, founded in 1766), Rotterdam (Studium Scientiarum Genetrix, founded in 1773), and Amsterdam (Amsteldamsche Dicht- en Letteroefenend Genootschap: Wij Streeven naar Volmaaktheid = Amsterdam Society for Poetry and Literature: We Strive for Perfection, founded in 1783).
On pp.266-267 of Jacob & Mijnhardt (1992), we learn that the above three societies from Leiden, Amsterdam and Rotterdam amalgamated in 1800 as the Bataafsche Maatschappij van Taal- en Dichtkunde = Batavian Society for Language and Literature. We also learn that in 1806, the Society was renamed Hollandsche Maatschappij van Fraaije Kunsten en Wetenschappen = Holland Society for Liberal Arts and Sciences, and in 1818 this society from The Hague joined them.
In the Univ. Leiden cat. we find a record for a publication by this Society entitled: Neêrlands kunstroem : uitgesproken bij gelegenheid der viering van het vijftigjarig bestaan van het Genootschap Kunstliefde spaart geen Vlijt, uitmakende de 's Gravenhaagsche afdeeling der Hollandsche Maatschappij van Fraaije Kunsten en Wetenschappen, op donderdag, den 10den januarij 1822. This record makes it clear that by 1822 the Society existed as a section based in The Hague of the Hollandsche Maatschappij van Fraaije Kunsten en Wetenschappen.
