Société d'Agriculture, de Commerce et des Arts de Bretagne =
Society of Agriculture, Commerce and Arts of Bretagne
Founding of the Society
Year
Authority / Notes
1757
According to Dumas (2000), p.249, this society was founded in Rennes on 1757, February 2, as the Société d'Agriculture, de Commerce et des Arts de Bretagne. It is interesting to note that the section header in which this information is found in Dumas (2000), p.249, is Société d'Agriculture de Bretagne; this may have been an alternative, shorter name for the Society.

This Society appears to one of the first, if not the first, French agricultural society.

The Society had disappeared by 1770 (Dumas (2000), p.254). It is, however, interesting to point out that Dumas (2000), p.256 notes that the second, and final, volume of the Society's Corps d'observations had been prepared by Abeille (the Secretary of the Society) and presented to the government in 1762, but it was printed only in 1772 after the return to calm in the political situation, that is, two years after the Society had ceased.

Further historical information is found in: Villers, Louis Guilhe-Lacombe de. Histoire de la Société d'agriculture, de commerce et des arts établie par les Etats de Bretagne (1757). (Saint-Brieux, R. Prud'homme : 1898. 43 p.) [Bibliot. Nat. France cat.].
