According to
its website,
this Academy finds its antecedents in two societies founded in the early
18th century.
In 1700 the Académie des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Lyon
was
founded.
In 1713, an Académie des Beaux-Arts de Lyon was founded.
In 1736, a split occurred between the music lovers and the members who
wanted learned discussions; the latter formed the
Société des Conférences, which in 1748 became
the Société Royale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.
In 1724, letters patent decreed that the 1700 body and the 1713 body
were independent parts of a whole.
In 1758, the Académie des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Lyon and the Société Royale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon were merged by letters patent into a single Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon. The Academy was dissolved in 1793. It revived in 1800, July 13, as an Athénée (described as a Société libre des sciences, lettres et arts). In 1806, it resumed its former name, the Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon. On 1814, August 29, it became the Académie Royale des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon.
